geezer rule 144

I've always been hard on glasses. You know, the kind you wear for seeing. I figure they have to keep up with me, not me them. I had a pair in my back pocket at one time, then sat on them. That was that.

Some months ago, the glasses I wore were so scratched up I put them aside and searched for an earlier prescription pair. They seemed to do the job okay so I put off going to the eye doctor. Then they snapped in two -- unwearable. I rummaged around and found another pair from three prescriptions ago. I have to keep finding my teeny screwdriver to keep fastening the little screw that keeps the right lens from falling out (it fell out twice already) but what the heck, I still don't have to make an eye appointment.

A geezer is resourceful, can make do.

  3. Geezer Rule #145: disregard Geezer Rule #144. Make that eye appointment and take good care of your eyes! Then list the name of a good optometrist so Troutbum Geezer can get his old, scratched glasses replaced with shinny new ones too.

  4. It seems to be all the fancy coatings that actually get the scratches.
I had at one point used acid glass etching paste to remove the coatings. It worked great on one lens, then destroyed the second. (I had two different types of lenses. Not all lenses will work with this trick) So although many people are successful with the trick, I don't think I'll try it again unless I have a back-up pair in waiting. This is dangerous stuff... It eats glass. Rubber gloves and layers of newspaper required.
I have my new lenses as uncoated as I can get them. Life if much better... and cheaper, too. I don't need the anti-reflective coating.
Lens manufacturers don't make it easy.

  5. Mike and I got new glasses in Flag last summer. Don't think mine are right. Dang it, I hate having to go through this again. It's not easy to fight time and gravity.
